🔧 Calculate Your Supplies

What is a Kennel Supply Calculator?

A kennel supply calculator estimates the consumables a shelter, rescue, or boarding kennel will get through — food in pounds, bedding items, and waste bags — for any number of animals across any span of days.

It takes the guesswork out of ordering, helps you build an emergency supply cache with confidence, and makes provisioning a sudden large intake or transport straightforward. Adjustable per-animal rates let you match the totals to your own feeding and clean-up routine.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions

How much food does a shelter dog or cat need per day?

It depends on the animal's size, age, and activity, but the calculator's default of about 1.5 pounds of dry food per animal per day is a reasonable planning average across a mixed kennel of dogs and cats. Large breeds and active dogs eat more; cats and small dogs eat considerably less. For a more precise order, replace the default with the average from your own feeding chart, and remember that puppies, kittens, and nursing mothers need extra. When in doubt for bulk ordering, round up — surplus stores well, while running short mid-week is a real problem.

What is this calculator useful for?

Three things mostly: routine stock-ups, so you order the right quantity instead of guessing; disaster and emergency preparedness, where you need a defined number of days of supplies cached for every animal; and planning a large intake, transport, or temporary shelter, where you have to provision quickly for a known headcount and timeframe. Enter the number of animals and the days you need to cover, and you get food in pounds plus bedding and waste-bag counts in one go.

Why does bedding round up to whole weeks?

Bedding — towels, blankets, or pads — is generally rotated and laundered on a weekly cycle rather than discarded daily, so the calculator works in whole weeks. If your coverage period isn't a clean multiple of seven days, it rounds the number of weeks up so you have enough clean bedding on hand for the full period. That conservative rounding means you'll never be caught short on a partial final week.

Can I adjust the per-animal rates?

Yes — the food, bedding, and waste-bag rates are all editable. The defaults (1.5 lbs food per animal per day, 2 bedding items per animal per week, and 3 waste bags per animal per day) are sensible shelter averages, but every facility is different. Cat-heavy shelters will use more litter and fewer waste bags; high-volume dog kennels may use more of everything. Tune the rates to your real consumption and the totals will track your operation closely.
