Phoenix, AZ – In a move aimed at educating the community about the needs of rabbits, three bunnies from the Arizona Humane Society have been adopted by the Phoenix Zoo. The bunnies, Benjamin, Pepper, and Lavender, will now help dispel common misconceptions about rabbits and promote a better understanding of their care requirements.

  • Becoming ambassadors for their species
  • Helping to educate the community about rabbit care
  • Supporting the Phoenix Zoo’s educational programs

The bunnies will undergo training with animal keeper Becky Mansel to prepare them for their new roles. Once trained, they will become the face of the Phoenix Zoo, making appearances at schools and libraries to educate children and adults alike about the needs of rabbits. This will be a unique opportunity for people who cannot visit the zoo to learn about these amazing animals.

  1. Care requirements are comparable to those of cats and dogs
  2. Rabbits require a lot of time and energy to care for
  3. They need daily exercise outside of their enclosures
  4. A balanced diet that includes hay, pellets, leafy greens, and sometimes treats like carrots

“People see rabbits as a starter pet, but they often forget that they require a certain level of care that means you need to give them a lot of time and energy and cleaning and veterinary appointments and careful handling to ensure their safety,” said Shelby Brose, senior manager of education and outreach at AHS. “Just like bringing on a Golden Retriever or a Chihuahua or a cat or a goldfish, you really got to do your research before you bring home a pet.”

“Rabbits are not just cute and cuddly, they are living creatures that require our care and attention. They need our time, our energy, and our commitment to thrive. By adopting a rabbit, you are not just gaining a pet, you are gaining a companion that will bring joy and love into your life.” said Shelby Brose.
