ARLEE — In a small town nestled in the heart of rural Western Montana, a new rescue is taking flight to help those in need. Second Chances Exotics Rescue is dedicated to providing a safe haven for exotic animals, many of whom come from troubled pasts. **The Founders’ Vision**
Lauren Gydas, president and co-founder of the rescue, has a clear vision for the organization. “We’re not just about rescuing animals; we’re about giving them a second chance at a happy life.” Gydas’ co-founder, Jamie Wallace, adds, “We’re passionate about breaking the cycle of neglect and abuse, and providing a forever home for these incredible animals.”
**Transforming Lives**
One of the rescue’s success stories is Sissy, a thirty-year-old macaw who was rescued in November. Gydas describes Sissy’s transformation as remarkable, “It’s taken a long time, a lot of trust building with her. She showed some signs of not being very well treated in her past.” Today, Sissy loves music, dancing, and attention, and is even training to be an ambassador for the rescue. **The Rescue’s Mission**
Second Chances Exotics Rescue has a wide range of animals in its care, from birds to ferrets to bearded dragons. The rescue aims to provide a safe and nurturing environment for these animals, and to educate the public about the importance of responsible pet ownership. “We want to give the public a chance to see the animals up close, and to learn about the challenges of caring for exotic pets,” says Gydas. **Youth Education and Trauma Recovery**
The rescue is also planning to launch an afterschool education program, which will focus on teaching children about responsible animal care and the importance of empathy and compassion. Gydas believes that this program will have a profound impact on the community, “We want to inspire the next generation of animal lovers and advocates. We believe that by teaching children about the needs and feelings of animals, we can help break the cycle of neglect and abuse.”
**Community Support**
The rescue is self-funded and relies on a team of four dedicated volunteers to care for the animals. Gydas and Wallace are committed to building a strong community around the rescue, and are seeking donations and volunteers to help support their mission. “We’re always looking for people to get involved,” says Gydas. “Whether it’s volunteering, donating, or spreading the word, every little bit counts.”
**A Brighter Future**
Despite being a relatively new organization, Second Chances Exotics Rescue is already making a name for itself in the community. The rescue is currently in the process of becoming a non-profit, and is building new enclosures to provide a safe and healthy environment for the animals. Gydas and Wallace are excited about the future, “We’re looking forward to growing and expanding our programs, and to making a real difference in the lives of these incredible animals.”
