Artistic representation for A HOPE nears opening of low cost spay neuter clinic in Santa Rosa despite setbacks

Some Northwest Florida animal advocates say the lack of spays and neuters is the reason behind so many shelters and rescues being at capacity.

The Problem of Pet Overpopulation

The issue of pet overpopulation is a complex and multifaceted problem that affects many communities across the United States. In Santa Rosa County, the situation is particularly dire, with a high euthanasia rate per capita.

Winkleman and Cary realized that many people cannot afford to pay for these services, and that’s why they created a low-cost spay and neuter shelter.

  • Overpopulation of pets, which can lead to overcrowding in shelters and a shortage of adoptable pets.
  • Increased risk of disease and parasites in pets.
  • Decreased quality of life for pets, as they may be forced to live in substandard conditions.
The Solution: A Low-Cost Spay and Neuter Shelter
  • Winkleman and Cary’s solution to the problem of high pet care costs is to create a low-cost spay and neuter shelter.

Cary says to spay or neuter a dog in the clinic would run around $150, about $80 for owned cats and about $50 for stray or feral community cats.

They had to get the government to sign off on the shelter, which was a difficult process. The cost of the shelter was $2.5 million, which was a significant amount of money at the time. The government was hesitant to provide the funding, citing concerns about the cost and the potential for the shelter to become a drain on the community’s resources. However, after months of lobbying and negotiations, the government finally agreed to provide $1.5 million in funding, leaving a significant amount of money to be raised from other sources. This meant that the organization had to be creative in its fundraising efforts, applying for multiple grants and seeking donations from private individuals and organizations.

The nonprofit organization, Helping Hands, is dedicated to providing support and resources to individuals and families in need.
