Check out these grant sources for your shelter as well as pets and humans in need in your community. Helping local pet owners take care of their pets when they can’t afford to may prevent these pets from becoming homeless.

The ASPCA offers many grants including emergency and disaster response grants, equine funds grants, grants to fight animal cruelty, grants for farm animals, grants for animal shelters and animal control agencies, grants for non-sheltering animal welfare organizations, and grants for spay/neuter programs. You’ll also find tips for grant seekers and a list of previous grant recipients on this page.

Pets of the Homeless provides pet food and veterinary care to the homeless and less fortunate in local communities across the United States and Canada with two types of grants. There are no deadlines to apply.

— Veterinary Care for the Homeless with Pets. Grants to veterinarians who go where the homeless congregate and provide veterinary care such as vaccines, spay/neuter and other needed treatments. We also award grants on a case-by-case basis.

— Pets of the Homeless Crate Project. Many homeless with pets do not have access to the necessary resources to move out of a state of homelessness because there are no accommodations for homeless with pets. Grants are awarded to homeless shelters looking for ways that allow pets to sanctuary with their owners.

The Brown Dog Foundation is an organization dedicated to helping families who find themselves in a temporary financial crisis at the same time their pet requires life-saving treatment or life-sustaining medications.

The Pet Project Midwest in Iowa offers two programs:

— The Pet Pantry provides pet food and supplies to families experiencing financial difficulties, thereby reducing the number of animals surrendered to shelters.

— The Iowa Pet alert helps spread the word about found and lost pets in the Des Moines metro. This service posts lost and found information on a Twitter or Facebook account.
