A Brighter Future for Animal Welfare in Malta
The Animal Welfare reform plan is a significant step forward for animal welfare in Malta.
Another key milestone was the transition from the 1717 helpline to the 24/7 153 service via Servizz.gov, making the system more reliable and user-friendly. This year alone, over 15,000 calls were received, ranging from reports of animal mistreatment to rescue requests. Support for NGOs and Volunteers NGOs, voluntary organisations and dedicated volunteers, like cat feeders, have received increased financial support. A collaboration with local councils led to a voucher scheme for cat feeders to purchase cat food, recognising and easing their vital work. Additionally, the Animal Welfare Fund reopened this year, with 18 applications submitted for grants ranging between €2,950 and €24,000. Sanctuaries are also benefitting from a newly launched maintenance scheme, which has already seen 10 applications for funding.
The Animal Welfare Department’s Adoption Efforts
The Animal Welfare Department has been working tirelessly to find forever homes for animals in need. Their efforts have been yielding impressive results, with a significant increase in adoptions over the past few years.
From infrastructure upgrades to new initiatives, 2024 has been a year of progress that paves the way for even greater achievements in the years to come.
