World Animal Protection

World Animal Protection protects animals by working with communities, governments, and businesses to make lasting change for animals. They help animals in the wild, in disasters, in communities, and on farms. They’re a global organization that operates in 15 countries around the world, including the United States.

Four Paws

An international organisation with offices in 12 countries, Four Paws is dedicated to helping animals all around the world. With the motto ‘We are there where animals are in need’, this organisation works with local animal shelters and conservation groups to identify and help under-resourced communities by providing free food, free veterinarian care and free neutering services.

As an individual, you can get involved with Four Paws activities by donating your time or money (or both!). This includes volunteering your time at your local office or acting as a foster parent to one of their rescued pets. You can also donate money directly to their cause: every little bit counts.

World Wildlife Fund

World Wildlife Fund (WWF) is the world’s leading independent conservation organization. It is truly amazing what they accomplish on a daily basis. WWF was founded in 1961 and their mission is to create a world where people and wildlife can thrive together (WWF, n.d.). They have offices in more than 100 countries, which means that they have many, many projects going on at any given time. Their focus falls into five critical needs: food, climate, fresh water, wildlife and forests.

National Wildlife Federation

The National Wildlife Federation (NWF) is a non-profit that has been protecting the planet’s wildlife, plants and habitats for over 75 years. NWF educates on how to implement sustainable practices and conduct conservation efforts through outreach programs and advocacy. You can support their mission by donating or volunteering.

Perhaps the oldest and most well-known animal charity, the RSPCA (Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) was founded in 1824 in England. The organization has since expanded across Great Britain, including Wales. In their own words, RSCPA works “tirelessly to put an end to animal cruelty through education, investigation, prosecutions and campaigning.”

Their mission is to promote animal welfare and create a world in which animals are treated with respect and compassion. Their work is centered around three main goals:

  • Prevention – promoting responsible pet ownership by educating communities about proper care of animals
  • Protection – inspecting animal shelters, conducting investigations into suspected abuse cases, providing veterinary treatment for abused animals, rescuing trapped or injured wildlife
  • Prosecution – working with police forces on criminal investigations of animal abuse
