The most creative backyard shelters to give you the best outdoor time ever

Dog houses

We’re two people who love living in the country. We live in a small, rural community with a friendly dog and cat population, and we love that our yard is packed with trees and wildlife. We want to keep the animals safely inside our house during harsh winter months, but we also can’t bear to sit inside all day during nice weather. So we came up with a solution: let’s build some dog houses for them!

We know there are different types of dog houses out there and that each type of dog house has its own advantages and disadvantages. To help you choose the one that’s best for your situation, we’ve outlined all different types of structures here—from the most basic wooden structures to fully-featured doghouses made from metal or plastic.

Cat condos

If you have one cat, a condo can be a great place for them to get elevated and observe the world. If you have more than one cat, it can turn into a fun game-slash-fight of trying to see who gets the higher spot on the condo. One cute tip we’ve seen is taking an old wooden ladder and repurposing it as a multi-level cat condo. This is also one of those rare situations where we recommend buying something that’s pre-made over building your own; there are many good options on Amazon, with reviews from users who’ve tested them out with their cats. We like this square honeycomb cat plant at just under $30, though if you want to go all out on a luxurious gift for your feline friend, this super tower will only set you back about $100. For less than either option at about $15, some owners find that hanging sisal rope baskets work just as well for scratching and climbing needs—though they’re not quite as tall, so keep that in mind if your kitty likes to climb high up and observe from above.

A treehouse is a structure built among the branches of one or more trees. You can use it as a quiet place to read, get some work done, perhaps even as a guest room. They’re usually built from wood and can be constructed in many different styles.

You can build your own treehouse for about $4,000 (USD). If you want something on the fancier end that utilizes multiple trees and might cost up to $50,000 (USD). A basic platform-style treehouse will generally take around a day to build. Keep in mind that building codes vary by area so make sure you check with your local municipality before starting construction.

She sheds and man caves

A good way to make your backyard more comfortable is to build a she shed or man cave. The she shed and man cave are two types of structures that you can put in your backyard for a variety of uses, including gardening, crafting, or just relaxing in your yard. She sheds and man caves are usually made from wood, but can be made from other materials as well. They should also include whatever items you need for their intended use. For example, if you’re using the space as your own personal retreat away from the main house then it would include things like bookshelves and a reading chair.

You can buy ready-made structures of this type at places like Lowe’s or Home Depot depending on the size of building you wish to have on your property. Keep in mind that these buildings aren’t just for women; men can also enjoy being outside without having to be bothered by household chores with these areas as well!

Greenhouses are the ideal solution for people who want to grow a lot of plants in a small space. They let the gardener control sunlight, temperature, humidity, and soil conditions year-round by using plastic sheeting to retain heat and light. Greenhouses can be made of wood, aluminum, glass, or even straw bales—the key is simply that they create an environment that protects fragile plants from harsh weather.

Some greenhouses are quite large (see photo above), while others may be as small as a table-top terrarium. They’re useful not just for growing fruits and vegetables out of season but also for propagating rare plants or experimenting with new varieties of seeds. If you live in an area that’s too cold to grow most fruits and vegetables outdoors during the winter months (or if you have hardly any outdoor space at all), consider building yourself a greenhouse!

In fact, there are so many incredible options out there that it was hard to narrow it down.

But we did our best! Here’s what we came up with:

• A poolside cabana that doubles as an outdoor kitchen.

• A treehouse where you can read and drink hot tea on the weekends.

• An art studio that’s both practical and whimsical.

• A detached garage that still looks like part of the house.

Dog House with a View

Does your dog have trouble seeing? I know ours does. She’s a chihuahua, and we’re like, come on, little guy. You can’t see over the porch railing but you’re still trying to bark at squirrels? And then she falls off the edge of the porch and we have to catch her in midair?

Although it can be frustrating, it is a little bit adorable. But if you want to give your dog—or any other pet that has trouble seeing over fences or railings—a better view, you might want to consider building them a special house!

Our dog’s name is Ivy, and we’ve been building her houses for years. We were in our first year of college when we decided she needed one that was elevated so that she could see over the fence. (We were really bored.) So we took some spare lumber and built a house on stilts that was about six feet high. It was great! She had an amazing view of the yard from her perch, and whenever she wanted to get down from it she just jumped off (which is when we would catch her). We thought it was a great solution to our problem, but apparently Ivy didn’t agree—
