Help Wanted Volunteers Needed

Who do volunteers help?

Let’s explore the benefits of volunteering. While it seems pretty straightforward to help animals and the shelter staff, volunteers do much more than that! By volunteering at a local animal shelter, you’re helping your community by reducing the amount of unnecessary euthanasia of animals in your area as well as building a closer community through shared experiences like adoption events.

You may be wondering how you’re going to benefit from helping others! Volunteering is known to have health benefits, increasing self-confidence and happiness while developing new friendships. Volunteering allows you to develop new skills which can be applied in other areas of your life.

Volunteers get a sense of accomplishment when they see animals find loving homes and are able to directly impact the lives of their community members.

Who can become a volunteer?

To help at the shelter, you must be at least 14 years of age. You can volunteer as an individual or with your group. Regardless, you must commit to volunteering for at least one hour per week and must be able to work independently.

What are the benefits of volunteering?

Volunteering is great for your personal and professional development. You can learn new skills and gain experience to add to your resume. If you’re a college student, volunteering is also a great way to bridge the gap between being at school in an academic setting and being in an actual job setting. It gives you something positive to add to your resume/CV when applying for jobs or grad school programs. Volunteering looks great on resumes because it shows that you are a well-rounded person with community involvement who cares about social causes and issues. Most of us want our work life to be more than just making money, but working towards making a difference in the world somehow. Volunteering enables you to do good things for your community while having fun doing it!

Did I mention free food? Yeah, most volunteering organizations feed their volunteers. So not only do you get the satisfaction of helping others, but also free food!

What hours are volunteers needed?

Volunteers are desperately needed during the peak summer months. The shelter is busiest from late May to early September and at times, the need for volunteers exceeds our number of available volunteers. Volunteering your time in Spring and Fall is also a great help.

Volunteer opportunities exist most days of the week and evening shifts are available. Volunteers have the flexibility to choose their own schedules so you can work a few hours a week or a few hours a month!

Volunteers are also needed to help organize fundraising events, volunteer orientations and training sessions. If you have special skills such as photography or grant writing, we would love to have your support!

Mindy D’s Story

Mindy D. is a volunteer at the Aurora animal shelter. She was inspired to join her local shelter after moving to Colorado for a job, and leaving behind her beloved rescue dog, Cowboy.

“I love animals so much that I decided to become a veterinarian,” said Mindy. “I went to school for six years, but after some time in practice, I realized that working with sick or injured animals all day was just too emotionally draining. Lucky for me, my new home had an amazing animal shelter that needed volunteers! It’s been a great way to get back into the field and do what I love without all the stress.”
