adoption procedure

Search for your perfect pet.

Searching from the main page:

If you are looking for a specific kind of pet, select the type of pet you are interested in (dogs or cats) in the first dropdown menu. If you don’t have a preference, just leave this on “Any”.

You can then use the second and third dropdown menus to filter your results by age and gender. If there is anything else that you are looking for, simply type it into the text box. You can search by breed, color, name or any other characteristic. Hit “Search” to see all pets matching your criteria!

You will be taken to a list of all animals matching your search parameters. Each animal entry lists an animal’s name, their dominant breed (or “Mixed”) if known as well as their age, gender and color – everything that might help you identify them when visiting us at the Shelter! There is also a thumbnail picture showing what they look like currently.

Submit an application.

The first step in adopting a pet is to submit an application. The application asks you to provide information about your household, including other pets you have, and the type of animal you are looking for.

If you have any questions about what information they need, or how long it will take to complete the application, reach out to them on their website or Facebook page.

Wait for confirmation of your application’s receipt.

Once you submit your application, you will receive an email confirming that we have received it. This email should arrive within 24 hours of when you submit the adoption application to our shelter. While this is normally the case, sometimes high traffic results in a delay. This can happen if more than one person applies for the same animal; in this situation, we review all applications and contact each prospective adopter with next steps as quickly as possible.

If you do not receive a confirmation email within 48 hours after submitting your application, please double check your spam or junk folder before contacting us.

Attend an adoption event or visit the shelter to meet your prospective pet.

We’re glad to hear you made a decision! Now it’s time to visit the shelter and meet your prospective pet. Once you get there, prepare to spend at least an hour inspecting the animal, taking it for a walk in our play area, and chatting with staff members about how the pet will fit into your home. Don’t forget the following items:

  • If you’re adopting a dog, bring along a leash and collar so we can help you take your potential new pet for a walk around our outdoor area.
  • If you’re adopting a cat, bring along a carrier so we can safely transport them from our facility to their new home.
  • Prepare any questions that are on your mind about the adoption process or any specific concerns about how this particular pet will fit into your family. Our staff is friendly and knowledgeable!
  • Be sure to wear weather-appropriate clothing if you plan on walking around outside with one of our dogs.
  • Bring along some hand sanitizer or antibacterial wipes so that after you interact with animals at other shelters or kennels, we can ensure our pets don’t catch anything they shouldn’t!

Complete the adoption contract, pay fees, and take your new animal home.

Once you and the staff have found a match, you will be required to complete an adoption agreement and pay an adoption fee. The staff will provide a folder full of information about caring for your new pet. You will also receive a free veterinary exam from any participating veterinarian. At this time, it is important to ask any questions that you may have about caring for your new pet so that you can leave feeling confident about your choice and prepared for ownership.

Take care of your animal’s medical needs prior to bringing him or her home with you. If the animal has not had his or her first set of shots, please schedule an appointment with one of our participating veterinarians immediately after adopting. Make sure to bring proof of vaccination when returning to the shelter to pick up your new furry friend!
